Abstract: Aim: Conventional digital mammography (CDM) is a basic screening method especially used for women over 40 years of age. CDM enable multiple images from different angles and different depth levels. To avoid superposition of healthy and ill breast tissue the Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) reveals to be a certain method. Thus, we aimed to compare CDM and DBT (Digital Breast Tomosynthesis) images of preoperative lesions to detect their significance. Material and method: We retrospectively compared 646 patients divided into two groups with their CDM and DBT results at our Institution. Only patients with type C and D breast tissue paterns were included. In the first group (76 patients) lesions detected on CDM or DBT images were compared according to 6 parameters with 4 histopathological parameters correlation. In the second group 570 patients with lesions detected on CDM and/or DBT and without histopathological correlation were compared due to the parameters. Findings: There was a statistical significant result for detecting nodulary opacity and distortion with DBT compared to CDM (p<0.05). A parenchymal distorsion-area correlated with histopathology as a maligant lesion was significant better identified on DBT compared to CDM (p<0.05). Detection for nodulary opacity was significant better with DBT compared to CDM (p<0.05). Result: CDM is the gold Standard for detecting preoperative breast lesions and reveals to be the most commonly used method together with ultrasound. According to our study DBT is more successful at detecting findings like nodulary opacities and parenchymal distortion.

Abstract: Accounting curriculum is constantly changing because of the persistent shifts in the discipline emanating from the developments in the profession. This paper explores teaching strategies used by accounting teachers to teach Grade 11 Financial Accounting in one district in South Africa. A qualitative case study was used to allow for an in-depth understanding of the strategies used to teach Financial Accounting by talking to and observing four Accounting teachers directly. The Grade 11 Accounting teachers were conveniently and purposively sampled from four schools. Semi-structured individual interviews and lesson observations were used as data generation methods. The data were then analyzed by identifying various themes that respond to the research question. The findings of the study revealed that teachers understand that Accounting is a unique practical subject with its own language. As a result, they used a variety of teaching strategies to enhance teaching and learning of the subject. What emerged from the findings is that, because of sequencing of knowledge, some topics build on each other and cannot be taught without first teaching other topics. Teachers insisted on determining learners understanding of foundational or prerequisite knowledge that was crucial in reinforcing learning of new concepts. Because teachers regarded Accounting is a practical subject that necessitates regular practice, teachers used frequent and different assessment tasks to consolidate learning of new knowledge.

Abstract: This article explored factors hampering the effective use of strategies practitioners used in developing mathematics in pre-grade R children in selected Early Childhood Development centres of Oliver Reginald (OR) Tambo Inland District of education. The study adopted qualitative research method in which semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data. Six practitioners from two ECD centres of OR Tambo Inland District in Eastern Cape Province were interviewed. The findings of the study revealed that in the two ECD centres, both being located in rural districts, practitioners had no or minimal training on ECD. The lack of training led to various factors that caused the hindrance of the effectiveness of strategies in the development of mathematics. This knowledge gap rendered them unable to stimulate and develop mathematics to children properly. Hence, these practitioners used traditional ways of instructional practices. They also lacked the ability and skills to create healthy learning spaces for the development of children to their full potential. Poor infrastructure of the two centres was another hurdle. Furthermore, they were also unable to assist children in using a variety of learning styles due to a lack of understanding of the ECD curriculum. Additionally, as centres were not registered with the Department of Social Development, it was difficult for them to apply for funding to improve the quality of the ECD programmers.

Abstract: This work aims to study the pollen grains spectrum (quantitative and qualitative analysis) and the physicochemical parameters of 14 selected honeys collected from the north-eastern of Algeria and, one foreign sample from Tunisia. Also, an inventory of major important melliferous plants of Souk-Ahras Province was carried out to survey and to valorise the melliferous flora. The results showed that the pollen richness varies between 0 and 499600 pollen grains per 1g of honey, belonging to 36 botanical families with 65 genera and 45 species were identified in the studied honey samples. According to Maurizio’s classes (1939), 33% of samples belong to Class V, 7% to Class IV and Class III, Class II with 13%, and 40% in Class I. For the realized inventory, a total of 108 melliferous plant species distributed in 40 families were recorded. Asteraceae, Rosaceae and, Fabaceae were the most represented families. The most used flowers were white, yellow, and, purple. Pollen and nectar together were the most food collected by the bees (64%). For the physicochemical proprieties, the quality of the studied honeys was included in international standards except for the HMF content in samples M8 and M11.

APPLICATION OF THE LEARNING PYRAMID IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Volume 77, Jul 2021
doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2021.7.10

View Abstract   Hide Abstract   |   PDF Version
Abstract: Teaching and learning in higher education have been transformed from traditional teaching to more modernized and progressive educational theories. The aim of this article is to discuss the learning pyramid and how it is applied as a method in teaching. Moreover, learning theories such as constructivism were analysed in relation to the learning pyramid. The learning pyramid dates to 1940s and it was used to support learning. It seems to have impressive explanations for improving students learning. ‘’However, it has been criticised for lack of theoretical basis’’. Despite this shortcoming, its relevance in today’s explanation of learning is found in the reflection of constructivism particularly the lower level of the pyramid. This lower level indicates that the highest percentage of learning occurs thorough active and collaborative learning which are some of the cornerstones of constructivism. The origins of the learning pyramid have been discussed and how the learning pyramid can be implemented in today’s effective teaching methodologies. It was concluded that passive learning methodologies are not effective for students as the level of retention is low. Participation in the learning process has proved to be enabling students to think deeply and be able to remember what they have been taught. Participatory methods of teaching have produced better results of retention compared to passive teaching methodologies. Therefore, the learning pyramid is recommended as a guide for teachers for effective instruction to their learners.

Abstract: Purpose: This study compares the Wi-Fi tracking of shoppers in shopping centres with tradi-tional tracking metrics resulting from the use of foot counters. Methodology: Wi-Fi tracking of shoppers’ Wi-Fi enabled devices was done at a shopping centre over a period of a fort-night. Data were recorded in csv format and compared with foot-counter data from the same location over the same period. Findings: It was demonstrated that while Wi-Fi tracking com-pares very well to foot counters for shopper counting per se, the data captured by Wi-Fi track-ing enable far deeper analysis of shopper patterns and behavior. Value of paper: Use of the methodology provides a cheap and easy way of gathering information about the profiles of shoppers, their engagement with specific displays and promotional events, shopper patterns over time, and even to identify the chipset maker of the wireless chipset.
