Abstract: The Mihr ü Mâh Mathnawi of the 16th Century Ottoman field, by poet, Jabri, is an allegorical and symbolic work written in accordance with Ptolemy's cosmogony. The work has nested layers of meaning; the first layer consists of a love story between Mihr ü Mâh. The other layer of meaning in work is based on a number of symbols that are open to mystical interpretation. In this study, the concepts of holy-light, holy-number and holy-space, directing the story construction, will be evaluated in the context of mysticism symbolism.

Abstract: In Buddhist scriptures about women, the Suj?ta Sutra and the ?r?m?l? Sutra are unique until now. Previous studies have mainly explored them in the religious and social perspectives. However, the speech acts in the text of the two sutras, which are written in the style of a spoken language, have been overlooked. The purpose of this research is to examine the image of women portrayed through speech acts. The sample of the research focuses on utterances of speech acts in the Suj?ta Sutra and the ?r?m?l? Sutra. A literature review and a descriptive approach are utilized to analyse the sample. The research scope is limited to the following two categories: utterances of speech acts; and contents of Five Good Deeds, Three Evils, Ten Evil Deeds in the Suj?ta Sutra, and Ten Great Vows in the ?r?m?l? Sutra. The findings indicate that illocutionary acts of directives and representatives are present in the dialogues in the Suj?ta Sutra, where Suj?ta as a wife and a woman is treated as inferior to her husband; and commissive acts are contained in the utterances in the ?r?m?l? Sutra, where Queen ?r?m?l? swears to Buddha to become Tathagata, thus achieving equal status with men. These speech acts ultimately connote that women had a passive, obedient social image in ancient times and that Buddhism pursues gender equality in a religious dimension. Thus, this research suggests that speech acts can be a useful tool in examining the image of women in the sutras.

Abstract: The forecasting concept can be expressed as predicting a variable’s future values using various methods under certain assumptions. In the estimations made using the time series, the value of a variable in the current period and the past period values are used. In the time series analysis, past time values of the variable to be estimated constitute the model’s independent variables. Learning from data, generalizing, working with very large samples, etc. are essential Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) methodology features. ANN methodology, which provides significant advantages thanks to these features, has vast usage possibilities in prediction modeling as in other fields. ANN has become one of the time series estimations’ methods since the late 1980s. This study handles an artificial neural network learning paradigm to estimate the exchange rate for economic targets. This paradigm has not prior conditions such as normal distribution or stationary. Therefore it has been frequently preferred in time-series analyses. The present study predicts the Turkish Lira’s value against the U.S. Dollar by using an ANN methodology. Our study is built upon purchasing power parity and the different researches dealing with exchange rate predictions. Our primary purpose is to minimize the error between the expected output of the network and the output it produces. This study uses an Artificial Neural Network model that builds upon the MLP to estimate the exchange rates. We first define the MLP with one hidden layer for this model, using monthly data from 2000 to 2019. In contrast, the independent variables are interest rates, Gross Domestic Product, and Consumer Price Index data for Turkey and the United States of America. We prefer batch training to train the ANN in SPSS Neural Networks 17.0 software. Sixty percent of the data were used in training, 25 percent in the testing, and 10 percent in the holdout, of the artificial neural networks, respectively. According to research results, the performance of ANN is relatively higher. While the relative error in the training set is 1 percent, the test set’s relative error is below 1 percent (0,007).

Abstract: This article discusses al-Ghazali's thoughts on the method of amar makruf nahi munkar (AMNM) against the government. The purpose of this discussion is to understand the method employed by al-Ghazali to call rulers to goodness and prevent them from evil. This is because, a good government will enhance peacefulness and prosperity of the country as well as the community. To achieve this goal, the method of content analysis is conducted on the text of his essay which is Kitab al-Amr bi al-Ma’ruf wa al-Nahy ‘an al-Munkar which is also one of the topics in Kitab Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Din. He proposed four approaches, namely al-ta’rif, al-wa’z, al-takhshin fi al-qawl and al-man’ bi al-qahr. The four methods are not directly stated by him. Thus, this paper describes the four methods and found that al-Ghazali viewed AMNM against the government is possible with all the methods mentioned except al-man’ bi al-qahr.

Abstract: Due to increasing advancement in technology and easy access to information, the banking sector is increasingly moving towards digitalization. The advancement in technology has resulted in fast-approaching entry of new digital solutions to streamline processes and systems. African Bank has continued to pursue large scale transformation programmes aimed at improving customer experience, digital transformation, and new ways of working. However, the digital edge has brought several challenges; with African Bank not immune to these challenges brought about with digitalization, this study explored the causes of barriers to adoption of internet banking by African Bank clients. Qualitative research methodology was adopted for this research study. The research study revealed that a lot still needs to be done if the bank is to realise the benefit of technology adoption and to cater for their clients’ daily needs in order to meet the growing demands around client service and client obsession in the banking industry. Respondents suggested several strategies to improve the adoption of Internet banking at African Bank. A proper implementation process was identified as the main and major factor to increase the adoption rate. the study makes a meaningful contribution in revealing the underlying causes of non-adoption of Internet banking by African Bank and also recommends measures which may ensure that the adoption rate increases, change cannot happen overnight and it is for this reason that the expected target.

Abstract: Objective: The objective of the study was to investigate the socio-demographic factors of health of rural population living in settlements of up to 1,000 people. We have analysed theoretical approaches explaining the mechanisms of influence of age, level of education, employment status and income levels on the health of rural residents. Materials and Methods: The empirical analysis is based on the selective monitoring of the quality and accessibility of services performed by Rosstat, in the fields of education, health and social services, and promotion of employment. Multidimensional distributions have been calculated using the SPSS 17.0. Results: The results of the research show the influence of the key social determinants (i.e. level of education, employment status, incomes, age) on health, as well as on the features of self-preserving behavior (i.e. levels of appeal for medical assistance, medical information literacy, the levels of compliance with doctor’s instructions). The results of the study allow us to identify the risk groups for the “ill health” of the rural population: people of older age groups, with low levels of education, without official employment and with incomes below the subsistence level. Conclusion: The results of the study can be used in the development and implementation of the public policy measures aimed at strengthening and maintaining the health of rural population.

Abstract: From 1980 onwards, one of the fundamental challenges that have been experienced by many Zimbabweans like any other post-colonial African societies is the rampant abuses of power by the post-independence national bourgeoisie. With this in mind, this study was triggered by a need to directly address the abuses of power by post-independent Zimbabwe’s government and thus, the fundamental objective of this paper was an illustration of Frantz Fanon’s contribution on post-colonial African states in relation to post-independent Zimbabwe’s political and economic predicament. A qualitative research method was followed. The findings showed that regardless of the available prospects for post-independent Zimbabwe’s national-development, there was an authoritarian government that abdicated its responsibilities to the masses by assuming the role of a parasitic national bourgeoisie that facilitates continued extraction of raw materials and exploitation of both society and resources. The study concluded that, what lies at the centre of post-independent Zimbabwe’s political and economic predicament is deliberate choices by senior members within the ZANU-PF government who for a period of more than three decades has had enable the exploitation of both society and national resources at the expense of national-development. Beyond that, the paper provided recommendations for a better post-colonial society.

UTILITY DETECTION IN PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT

Volume 77, Mar 2021
doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2021.3.10

Abstract: Purpose of paper: Excavation undertaken prior to real estate development may cause unintended damage to subsurface utilities, which may cause of disruption in electricity supply, telecommunication, water supply and other essential public services. It is desirable that the exact location of the utilities be ascertained without causing damage to them. This paper provides an overview of available non-destructive technologies (NDT’s) for subsurface utility detection. Methodology: The background, limitations and advantages of available NDT’s were investigated. In typical NDT’s, energy is transmitted into the ground and the reflected energy from subsurface utilities is recorded. Processing of the recorded information produces data about the distribution of physical properties associated with the underground objects. Leading NDT’s for utility detection include Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Electromagnetic (EM) Methods, Low Frequency Electromagnetic Fields, Magnetic Methods, Acoustic Emission Methods and Infrared Thermography. Findings: Available NDT’s are capable of locating underground services, and can therefore diminish unintended utility strikes. However, these technologies can be unreliable, and the accuracy of the applicable NDT should be determined, while considering the relevant site circumstances. GPR is considered the most sophisticated NDT for utility detection. Applying GPR and EM methods in combination is the most effective solution for the majority of underground survey conditions. Value of paper: Locational data for underground services is often unavailable or inaccurate. Existing utilities are frequently damaged during construction excavations, causing project delays and unplanned expenses for all parties involved. Knowledge about the use and limitations of NDT’s can reduce the risk of damage caused to existing services, and avoid substantial costs and time delays.

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to explore the influence of parental involvement in the teaching of reading to first language learners in Sepedi at the Foundation Phase. An exploratory case study design of the qualitative approach was employed in this research. Participants were purposively selected from the four public schools in a rural Mpumalanga Province, where Sepedi is the language of teaching and learning. Four school principals and 8 teachers (two from each school) were considered, giving a total of twelve participants in the study. Face-to-face individual interviews were conducted with the school principals while focus group discussions were administered with two groups of four teachers to gather data. The collected data was subjected to the thematic approach to facilitate interpretation as well accord it meaning. The study established that some parents are not adequately oriented on the precise roles they should execute in assisting their children to master reading skills and the conspicuous absence of library services in communities. It is recommended that the Development of Education should schedule workshops, seminars, and training sessions and develop a reading manual to appraise parents on meaningful participation in the reading progress of their children as well as mobilise stakeholders to establish community libraries to increase access to books by most families.
