Abstract:
Background: Pilonidal sinus (PS) disease is a condition that may have a symptomatic or asymptomatic clinical course. Symptomatic PC may have adverse effects on the general health and daily activities of living, particularly in the actively employed younger population, due to the associated pain, discharge, and abscess formation. In this study, our aim was to examine these adverse impacts on the daily activities of life. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 individuals with pilonidal sinus disease were included. Demographic data were recorded and SF-36 forms were completed by the patients. Age, gender, and the duration of symptoms were assessed and compared with population norms. Results:Patients between 18 and 30 years of age were found to seek medical assistance earlier than other groups, and patients with symptom duration of more than one year were found to experience more severe adverse effects on social functions. In addition, female patients were found to experience higher levels of pain intensity than male patients. A comparison with Turkish population norms showed more prominent adverse effects on pain and social function domains among females, and on all domains among males. These effects were also associated with a reduced quality of life. Conclusions: Pilonidal sinus disease has an adverse impact on activities of daily living in both sexes, more marked in male patients, with a negative effect on life quality.
