Ponte - Nov 2017 - Volume 73 - Issue 11 doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2017.11.15 Abstract: The aim of this desktop study is to present and understand the concept of cooperatives. There are many cooperative models such as agricultural, marketing, housing, consumer, workers, credit cooperatives and others. However, the cooperatives models discussed in this study are traditional, new generation and workers cooperatives. These cooperative models are practised in South Africa and also in the countries selected for experiences in this study. The study also outlines the rationale of cooperatives focussing on their role to eliminate poverty and employment creation. The challenges encountered by cooperatives, external and internal factors contributing to the success of cooperatives are also reflected in this study.
