EFFECT OF BODY MASS INDEX AND WAIST CIRCUMFERENCE ON HEMOGLOBIN A1C IN KOREAN ADULTS WITHOUT DIABETES MELLITUS Author(s): Hea Shoon Lee J. Ponte - Jul 2017 - Volume 73 - Issue 7 doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2017.7.24 Abstract: The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of body mass index(BMI) and waist circumference(WC) on hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c) in Korean adults without diabetes mellitus(DM). This study conducted a secondary analysis using a raw data of The Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES V-3), 2015 which researched by Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and analyzed survey and blood test for total of 4.205 adults who are over 19. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson correlation coefficient and Logistic regression analysis(SPSS 24.0). Regarding the influencing factors on high-risk DM(HbA1c 5.7%~6.4%), the major findings of this study were as follows. First, as the age increases, high-risk DM got increased 1.063 times, Female's rate of high-risk DM got decreased 0.865 times than male's. Second, as the BMI increases, the rate of high-risk DM got increased 1.157 times, specifically compare to normal weigh, overweigh got 1.720times increased and obese got 2.877times increased. Third, as WC increases, the rate of high-risk DM increased 1.072 times and specifically for male, it increased 2.652times when WC?90cm compare to WC<90cm. For female, it increased 3.511times when WC?85cm, compare to WC<85cm. We want to provide basic data on DM prevention and intervention program for adults.
