in Kemiren - Banyuwangi Community Cultural Life
Using traditional music is a cultural heritage of the archipelago whose continuity still exists and awakes in the village of Kemiren Banyuwangi. This type of Using music can be found in the form of music dish accompanying dance, instrumental music, and musical accompaniment of Gending Banyuwangen. The presence of various forms of art from the outside is not able to destabilize the love of Kemiren villagers towards the Using music. This study aimed to reveal the pattern of community in preserving their traditional music and analyze the elements and structure of Using music in the village of Kemiren Banyuwangi. This research utilized a qualitative method with ethnomusicology approach. The object of this research was the villagers, leaders, elders, and artists from Kemiren village. The data were drawn using observation techniques, interviews, and document studies. The researchers acted as instruments as well as data collectors. Based on the data analysis and its results, it was inferred that the indigenous villagers of Kemiren always tried to maintain their traditional music. The conservation towards Using’s tradiional music happens through synergy and harmonization of family, society, elders, local authorities in order to performing rituals and local tradition. The government had provided a place for cultural activities through performances, competitions, and festivals. The activities had an impact on the enthusiasm of the citizens in reviving the distinctive art of Using. Besides of those, beliefs and heritage were still be the fundament and worldview for local’s social behaviour rules and norms. Most of the Using music in Kemiren used 4/4 bar, with the 1/16 tap as the smallest fraction. The vocals were sung by using legato and acciaccatura to create a typical Using twist. The melody used the Pentatonic Minor scales with harmony in C minor or C #, with a two-piece song structure, and many repetitions of phrases and motifs.
