AGING FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF ELDERLY PEOPLE IN TURKEY: A FOCUS GROUP STUDY OF A NURSING HOME Author(s): Sevgisun Kapucu ,Bilge Bal Ozkaptan J. Ponte - May 2017 - Volume 73 - Issue 5 doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2017.5.48 Abstract: In this qualitative study, the aim was to determine the self-perception of elderly people living in nursing homes, their opinions about old age, and their expectations of society. The study was a focus group study, conducted using a qualitative method. The study involved 30 elderly participants who were living in the nursing home. Three themes were created by the participants' expressions. The first theme is called "Meaning of Aging", the second one is called "Opinions and Attitudes towards Aging", and the third is called "Changes Experienced in Old Age". In our study, it was determined that the majority of the elderly people in the nursing home had a negative perception of aging. Living in a nursing home can lead to a greater sense of loneliness in the elderly. Making arrangements in the community to promote healthy and active aging is an important influence on the development of a positive perception of aging.
