Abstract:
The study aimed to determine the factor structure and to established psychometric properties of the Comprehensive Inventory of Desirable Responding (CIDR) for Pakistani population. Two independent studies were carried out. The sample of the first study included 290 students (Mean age =19.78, SD =1.65) consisting of 43.8% males. The sample of the second study constituted 544 students (Mean age =18.59, SD = 2.11) including 46% males. The sample age ranged from 17 to 25 years recruited from both public and private institutes. After collecting the data, results were compiled and analyses were conducted on the data using SPSS 21 and AMOS 21. In study 1, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted to determine the factor structure of CIDR. In study 2, the factor structure emerging from EFA was confirmed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). EFA results showed four factors solution and explained 21.46 % variance with factor loading ranging from λ=. 30 to λ=.63. In study 2, factor loading of items on all four factors ranged from λ=. 20 to λ=.55 and with excellent fit indices (χ2 (525) =545.507; CFI=.989, TLI=.987, IFI=.990, RMSEA=.008), the factor structure was confirmed. Reliabilities of final validated scale ranged α = .60 to .68 and correlations among factors ranged from .16 to .52. The results supported the factor structure with four subscales measuring different aspects of social desirability. Results of the present study supported the presence of self-deception (denial & enhancement) and impression management (agentic & communal) as meaningful and valid components of desirable responding. However, the process and content level were not confirmed.
