Ponte - Sep 2017 - Volume 73 - Issue 9 doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2017.9.5 Abstract: Regardless of the high impact of the modern technologies, textbooks undeniably play a vital role in ESL settings. Therefore, the regular evaluation of the effectiveness of the textbook materials is crucial for the practitioners. This research aims to evaluate Cutting-Edge textbooks from ESL teachers perspectives (Sarah Cunningham and Peter moor, 2007), which is currently utilized at most language colleges in Malaysia. Thirty ESL teachers teaching at some language colleges of Malaysia participated in this study. A textbook assessment checklist including 51 statements was used for data collection. In order to analyze the data, the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS.20) was employed. The results showed that while most teachers were highly acquiescent with Cutting-Edge series, the textbooks still have some weak points that should be considered by teachers. Finally, some pedagogical implications for teachers, material developers and textbook designers in ESL contexts are proposed.
