EVALUATION OF VISUAL QUALITY AND INFORMATION CONTENT REGARDING CARE AFTER CATARACT SURGERY IN TURKISH WEB PAGES

Abstract:
The information available on the health related web pages are not updated as fast as the advances in health and technology. Purpose of the study is to evaluate the visual quality and information content available in the Turkish web pages regarding care after cataract surgery. Data of this descriptive study were collected between April and May 2017 by browsing through web pages. Using different search engines like Google, Yandex and Bing, the keywords �care after cataract surgery� and �things to consider after cataract surgery� were searched in Turkish language and first 10 web pages of each search engine were taken into consideration. Web pages that were evaluated individually by each researcher in regard to their general structure, content and visual quality. Thirty web pages were accessed by using three different search engines and after eliminating overlapping web pages, 16 of them were included in to this study. Among the evaluated web pages, 81.25% of them were determined to have low visual quality and content and 68.75% of them were not using the colors appropriately. There were some both outdated and missing information on the care, medication use. Web pages were not prepared properly to guide users in post-cataract surgery care and the information was not up to date and there were serious shortcomings in the design aspect as well. The missing and haphazardly put information are far from meeting the needs of patients and their relatives who are looking for medical support.
