Abstract:
This theoretical article discusses children�s independent mobility and their awareness of the social environment as they move around within their neighbourhood. Foundation Phase Life Skills as one of the subjects guides and prepares learners for life and its possibilities, including equipping learners for meaningful and successful living in a rapidly changing and transforming society. Through Life Skills learners are exposed to a range of knowledge, skills and values that strengthen their physical, social, personal, emotional and cognitive development. The subject raises awareness of social relationships in young children. These skill are essential to children as mobile beings who are granted licences to independent mobility. Using a Social Ecological Theory as an underpinning, this article explores and discusses children�s awareness of their environment and aspects that can pose risks to their lives as they move around independently. The article makes recommendations on how young learners can be assisted to be better prepared and fully aware of their social environment in order to curb risks involved in children�s independent mobility.
