PSYCHOLOGICAL ATTACHMENT OF EMPLOYEES IN A BANKING ENVIRONMENT IN GHANA: IS ORGANISATIONAL COMMITMENT A REALITY OR A BUSINESS MYTH?

Abstract:
This study investigates the level of organisational commitment of employees in a banking environment in Ghana. This study investigates the level of commitment of employees, the intercorrelation among its sub-dimensions and the influence of the biographic variables (age, gender, tenure and marital status) on the key dimensions respectively. The sub-dimensions for organisational commitment include affective commitment, continuance commitment and normative commitment. The commitment of employees plays a crucial role in the banking industry as its performance is dependent on its employees who are instrumental in contributing to the decision-making of the company and in delivering services to customers. This study adpted a mixed method approach. The study sample consists of 123 employees, drawn using the simple random sampling technique from three branches of a reputable banking industry located in Kumasi, a suburb of Ghana. Furthermore, in drawing the sample of 10 managers to interviewed using structured interviewing, judgement sampling was usedHence, data was collected using questionnaires and interviews. The psychometric properties (validity and reliability) of the questionnaire were evaluated. The quantitative data was evaluated using both descriptive and inferential statistics and the qualitative data was analysed using content and thematic analyses. This study particpants displayed moderate levels of organisational commitment. This study also reveals that there are exists significant relationships amongst the sub-dimensions of organisational commitment (affective, continuance, normative). Significant differences, based on the biographical profiles of employees were also noted. Based on the outcomes of the study, recommendations are made to contribute to higher levels of commitment in employees.
