Ponte - Dec 2017 - Volume 73 - Issue 12 doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2017.12.43 Abstract: Nowadays, only the initial steps have been taken to implement the chess lessons in the framework of sports-oriented physical education in the general educational schools of Russia. The substantive part of the discipline Chess, the means, methods, conditions and organization of classes, the effectiveness and integration of lessons and methods for training young chess players, the mechanisms for introducing chess into the primary school educational process remain insufficiently studied.\nIt is necessary to develop a unified program for the training of young chess players within the school sports-oriented physical education that meets the modern requirements of the training process, which fosters the formation of a high level of logical thinking.\nThe article shows the possibility of forming logical thinking in primary school students in the process of teaching the subject Chess in the conditions of the general education school on the example of the Republic of Kalmykia. The study involved students of lower grades (age 8-9 years).\nThe experimental method of forming logical thinking of schoolchildren in the process of chess education as basic means contains: regular competitions, solving chess problems, conducting simultaneous games, participating in match meetings and team competitions.\nAn important element of the methodology was the use of diagnostic tools (in the form of test tasks) that characterize the level of formation of logical thinking of young chess players and their technical and tactical skills.\nA standard program aimed at teaching chess at the beginning level was used in the control group.\nThe author\'s methodology, introduced in the experimental group, has raised the level of the formation of the logical thinking of younger schoolchildren. The obtained results show that the academic achievement of the experimental group students in the learning process was higher compared with the students of the control group.
