APPLYING THE CDIO FRAMEWORK FOR PROGRAMME MODERNIZATION: TPU EXAMPLE

Abstract:
The article describes the experience of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) on the modernization of engineering educational programs in accordance with the CDIO Approach. Particular attention is paid to the program of continuing professional education (training) on the implementation of the CDIO concept in engineering education. This program was specifically designed to improve the skills of university teachers, whose task is to modernize educational programs in accordance with the CDIO Standards. The paper outlines the background and stages of implementation of CDIO Concept in Tomsk Polytechnic University as well as provides some specific results achieved. General educational programs were analyzed to further comply them with CDIO Concept. This analysis also made it possible to determine the areas of challenge that embrace improvement of educational programs, their structure and content; modernization of working space for students to develop their projects; improvement of teachers’ qualification. The article also describes the experience of modernization of TPU “pilot” educational programs of Bachelor cycle by implementing CDIO principles, which also includes a brief comparative analysis of evaluation of the programs before and after modernization. Paper is supplemented with the bright images showing how working spaces and laboratories for the students have been redesigned to allow developing creative projects and implementing the ideas into practice using modern laboratory equipment.
