THE LEVEL OF PROFICIENCY OF MUSIC TEACHERS AT GUZELYURT PRIMARY SCHOOLS AND THE CONNECTION WITH PRIOR LEARNING, TEACHING METHODS, MATERIALS AND RESOURCES AND IN-SERVICE TRAINING Author(s): Ertem Nalbantoglu ,Jale Yiltas J. Ponte - May 2017 - Volume 73 - Issue 5 doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2017.5.40 Abstract: Music education is crucial as it increases children’s cognitive development. In many parts of the world, classroom teachers are the only teachers of music in primary schools. Similarly in North Cyprus, most teachers who provide music lessons in primary schools have no expertise in music education. This research aims to state the findings regarding the level of proficiency of classroom music teachers in terms prior training, the employment of teaching methods and the adequacy of teaching materials and resources that are used in primary schools. The research is significant as it is the first to explore information around music education in the Güzelyurt district of Northern Cyprus. The sample of this research consists of 12 music teachers from 12 primary schools in Güzelyurt district. Drawing from the questionnaire data augmented by classroom observations and interviews in the spring of 2013, music teachers were found mostly to have been graduates from Atatürk Teacher Academy who had not had sufficient training in a higher education programme in order to enable them to provide music lessons in the primary schools. Furthermore, the role of the ministry of Education in terms of the frequency of and the quality of in-service training for music teachers will be explored
