Abstract:
Quality use of analgesics could be considered an indicator of quality of care. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of training regarding the quality use of analgesics on the knowledge and practices of nurses. The study is a quasi-experiment research design. This study was an intervention research conducted with thirty-five nurses who worked at a university hospital's surgical clinics and had volunteered to participate. Questionnaires to evaluate nurses knowledge and a checklist to evaluate their practices were used for data collection. The Mc Nemar Test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and the T-Test were used for the statistical evaluation of the data. The study showed that the mean knowledge score of nurses had increased to 73.9 from 49.4, and the mean practice score of nurses had increased to 63.8 from 47.8 after training. These differences between the mean scores were statistically significant. Nurses knowledge and practices showed a significant improvement with specific training on the quality use of analgesics. The similar training programs are recommended for quality development of analgesic administration. Keywords: analgesic, nurse, pain, quality use of medicine, training.
