Abstract:
This study was conducted to investigate the current health-adverse issues caused by the use of digital textbooks and to provide policy recommendations to resolve these problems. This study presents issues based on a literature review, in-depth interviews with students, focus group interviews with teachers, and measurement of electromagnetic waves present within the classroom. The internal aspects of the classroom environment analyzed were students’ posture, their seating arrangement, and heat and intensity of illumination. The external aspects of the classroom environment analyzed included instability of the digital textbook communication environment and software, as well as the lack of teacher education and support. To resolve internal problems, it is necessary to provide guidelines and support to correct students’ posture, and keep a check on the distribution of electromagnetic waves; also, a regular inspection system must be established to maintain students’ seating arrangement as well as illumination and ventilation in the classroom. To resolve external problems, the functions of tablet personal computers must be improved and the school’s internet network and software must be maintained.
