Abstract:
Social empowerment is one of the powerful indicators of human development. There have been many studies focusing on the economic impact of microfinance intervention on its beneficiaries. Measuring economic impacts are easier as these are quantitative in nature. However, to gauge the full potential of this program the social impact needs to be researched in depth. Through this study, the researchers have tried to investigate five social impact variables of microfinance namely – Decision Making, Health, Empowerment, Social Communication and Crisis Management. The research also aims to study the impact and relation of independent demographic variables on the social variables identified. Data has been collected from 270 SHG members through a structured questionnaire. Statistical techniques like Correlation, Chi- square test, KMO and Barlett’s Test, Cronbach Alpha, ANNOVA and Scheffe’s Test has been used for the analysis of data collected. It has been observed that there is significant effect of demographic factors on the social impact variables. Positive correlation is noted among the social variables identified. The paper concludes that microfinance has positive social impacts on its members and their communities. The demographic variables such as age, education level and source of loan have a positive correlation on social impact variables and hence such factors need to be given due attention while formulating any development program.
