We provide a brief history of Lie Symmetries and it uses in obtaining solutions to ordinary differential equations. The concept of invariance, Lie groups and Lie Algebra is also explained. We provide an algorithm on how to obtain Lie symmetries of functions and ordinary differential equations. We also obtain the complete symmetry group of a second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation. We use Lie symmetries to reduce the order an ordinary differential equation.
