THE EFFECT OF SOCIAL MEDIA USE ON THE ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND ATTITUDE OF STUDENTS Author(s): Erinc Ercag , Murat Tezer J. Ponte - Jul 2017 - Volume 73 - Issue 7 doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2017.7.11 Abstract: This research was conducted in a type of survey model in order to determine the effect of using social media on the academic success and attitudes of high school students. A questionnaire used in line with the purpose consisted of demographic questions, the internet usage, the students habits of social media usage and the third part was composed of the questions about attitude towards the social media. The research was conducted on 600 students enrolled in high schools under the secondary education in North Cyprus during the spring semester of the academic year 2015-2016. As a result of the research, it has been seen that students frequently use social media to be up-to-date and to communicate with their friends. It has been seen that most of the students have accessed the social media websites mostly on mobile phone social media websites. It has also been found that they widely use portable mobile devices. It is considered that the fact that the general attitude of students towards the social media is at the instability level may be due to the insufficient discussion and sharing of the topics narrated by teachers in the classroom environment in the social media environment.
