SELF-CONCEPT IN TEACHING AND LEARNING Author(s): Tuntufye S Mwamwenda J. Ponte - Dec 2019 - Volume 75 - Issue 12 doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2019.12.17 Abstract: Self-concept is people's way of perceiving themselves and it may be either positive or negative. People have a perception of themselves independently of others and an interpretation of how they are perceived by others (Mwamwenda, 2019). Coopersmith, as cited by Howcroft (1990:31), defines self-concept as the context of self-esteem as follows: “By self-esteem we refer to the evaluation which the individual makes and customarily maintains with regard to himself; it expresses an attitude of approval or disapproval, and indicates the extent to which the individual believes himself to be capable, significant, successful and worthy.”
