Abstract:
An on-farm adaptive trial was conducted at five locations in Kano State, Nigeria, to assess the adaptability of some improved sweet-potato lines with a view to harness their potentials in reducing the demand deficit in the study areas. Treatments consisted of ten improved sweet-potato lines and a local (Dan-china) as check. These were evaluated for growth, yield traits and root yield. Randomized Complete Block Design was used. Results of the study revealed significant (p˂ 0.05) differences among lines in days to maturity and vine length. Similarly, the lines differed significantly in mean root weight, root length, root diameter, vine weight and root yield. These traits were in most cases higher in King J and Dan-china. Response of the lines to all the traits were significant in all locations except for days to maturity indicating that is genetically controlled. Kibiya out-performed all other locations in all the measured traits. The research revealed that al the lines have potentials for increased root yield particularly if the production period could be extended such that optimal precipitation coincides with root formation and root bulking stages.
