Abstract:
Objective: The aim of the study to determine of the views and practices by the operating room team on the subject of safe surgery. \r\nMethods: 120 persons participated in the study (surgeons, nurses, anesthesia technicians, anesthesiologists, anesthesia nurses and surgical technicians) working at the State Hospitals and University Hospital in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The data were collected with a questionnaire form containing the views and practices about the safe surgery checklist of the team. \r\nResult: It was determined that a majority of the operating room team (87.5%) believed that the Safe Surgical Checklist (SSC) contributed to patient safety. It was determined that the items practiced the most on the SSC were checking the fasting situation (99.2%), questioning the history of allergy (98.3%), preparing surgical operation materials (96.7%), and providing for sterilization (100.0%).\r\nIt was found that the items on the list with the least compliance were the practice of Checking Prior to Surgical Incision and confirming all team members have introduced themselves by name and role at 56.7% and confirming the patients name, procedure and where the incision will be made at 66.7%. Whereas, in the lead of the causes for the formation of medical errors was the fact that the number of nurses was few at 53.3%, excessive workload at 70.0% and lack of communication within the team at 50.8%. \r\nConclusion: The practices/safe surgical checklists for providing safe surgery in the operating rooms were realized at all of the hospitals, but it can be said that non-performed and incomplete applications may threaten safe surgery. It is thought that planning of trainings to improve compliance to the Safe Surgical Checklist will contribute to the reduction of medical errors.\r\n\r\nKey Words: Operating room, safe surgery, safe surgery checklist, medical errors, nursing
