Ponte - Mar 2021 - Volume 77 - Issue 3 doi: 10.21506/j.ponte.2021.3.1 Abstract: This article examines use of speech as a device of characterization in EDM Sibiya’s novel entitled Ngiyolibala Ngifile (2010). Speech is discussed as it is used to reveal the personality, physical appearance and age of characters. The characters to be considered are Khanyisile, MaKhoza, Madonsela and Khanyile. Prior to discussing each character, a brief introduction of the role of the character in the novel, is made. The different sections of this discourse are introduction, summary of the novel, personality, physical appearance and age. The concepts of characterization and speech are defined as part of the introductory section of the discussion. Aspects of speech that are soliloquy, monologue and dialogue are briefly discussed under speech. A concluding remark is provided towards the end of the study.
