Abstract:
In the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd on May 25th 2020, numerous symbols of colonialism were attacked globally. In exploring how symbols both “link and interpret”, this paper argues that the attacks constitute “ideological conflict.” Using case studies from across the globe the researchers show that the attacks on symbols are attacks on the ideology of colonialism. The paper furthermore divulges into why symbols which represent the three toxic traits of colonialism; racism, imperialism, and slavery, are glorified in a supposed multi-cultural world. The research concludes with recommendations from South Africa and France which offer insight on society, transformation, and decolonization.
