KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE, AND PRACTICE OF PHARMACISTS ABOUT PHARMACEUTICAL CARE FOR DIABETES MELLITUS PATIENTS IN A PRIMARY CARE CENTER IN SAUDI ARABIA

Abstract:
Introduction: Several studies were conducted to assess the efficiency and effects of pharmaceutical care and/or clinical pharmacists on the health outcomes of patients with diabetes mellitus and/or several chronic diseases. Having a clinical pharmacist in ambulatory care, it is hoped that pharmaceutical care can be improved.
Aim: The study aimed at assessing pharmacists` knowledge, attitude, and practice in the pharmaceutical care of diabetes mellitus patients in a primary care center in Saudi Arabia.
Methods: A cross-sectional study of the pharmacists working in the Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Department was conducted using a validated questionnaire. The pharmacists attended biweekly diabetic pharmaceutical education sessions for six months conducted by a clinical pharmacist.
Results: Questionnaires were completed by 117 pharmacists at the beginning of the study and 103 by the end of. Majority of the pharmacists who participated in the study had satisfactory knowledge of pharmaceutical care, a positive attitude, and demonstrated good practice in identifying prescription errors and interventions. Sophisticated definitions of PC were provided by 67% of the participants.
Discussion: The study demonstrates the efficacy of implementing educational sessions to improve the knowledge, attitude, and practice of pharmacists in diabetes care in order to optimize the services they provide to diabetic patients.
