Multi-band PSS and AVR parameters optimization via a Genetic Algorithm technique to Improve Transient Stability of Multimachine Power System

Abstract:
With its three frequency bands structure, the new Multi Band Power System Stabilizer (MB-PSS) has recently been used with the Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) in order to improve the power systems stability. Adjusting the parameters of these two regulators can play a significant role in improving damping any eventual electromechanical oscillations in power systems. The MB-PSS ensures a maximum damping, not only in local modes guaranteed by conventional regulators, but also in interregional mode. This paper introduced a new technique based on Genetic Algorithms (GA) that optimizes the AVR and MB-PSS parameters. A comparison based on simulation between the proposed approach GA (MB-PSS/AVR) and the controllers (AVR without MB-PSS, AVR with MB-PSS) was performed. The simulation results with the multimachine network nine-bus test system, known in the literature as Western System Coordinating Council (WSCC), show the efficiency of the proposed approach to damp oscillations and improve the power systems stability.
