Abstract:
The objective of this study was to evaluate the total phenolic content and to determine the antibacterial potential of the leaves of Cotula cinerea commonly used in southeastern Algeria for the treatment of various ailments. For this, methanolic crude extract was prepared with absolute methanol. Total phenols concentrations were analysed using Folin-Ciocalteu’s method. The obtained methanolic crude extract was screened for its antibacterial activities against pathogenic microorganisms using agar diffusion method. High total phenolic content was recorded (0.143 mg GAE/ mL Ext) in the leaves of our plant. Results revealed that a remarkable inhibition of the bacterial growth was shown against the tested microorganisms and especially towards Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853 which are considered among the most resistant to antibiotics. In conclusion, our data suggest that Cotula cinerea extract has antibacterial activity and thus could be used as alternative therapy against antibiotic resistance bacteria.
