TOMATOES (SOLANUM LYCOPERSICUM L.) MARKETING IN OGUN STATE NIGERIA: A CASE STUDY OF LAFENWA MARKET

Abstract:
The study analyzed the marketing analysis of Tomatoes in Ogun State. The data for this study was obtained from 150 Tomato marketers randomly selected from Lafenwa market of Ogun state, Nigeria with the aid of a well-structured questionnaire. Lafenwa market was purposely selected as the study area because both retailers and wholesalers could be found in these locations. Information such as age, household size and marketing activities collected from the respondents were analyzed using descriptive, budgetary analysis, benefit cost ratio (BCR) and regression analysis. Descriptive statistic results revealed the mean age of the Tomato marketers was 44years, 69.39% of marketers belong to female gender with mean household size, years of education and marketing experience estimated at 4 persons, 8 years and 7 years respectively. Based on their marketing activities, 58.9%, 45.3% and 88.0 % of the respondents were tomato wholesalers, purchased Tomatoes directly from farm and sells both round and oblong Tomato types in these locations respectively. Problems encountered by the respondents include price fluctuation (84.0%), Tomato scarcity during off season (94.67%) and spoilage due to lack of storage facilities (97.0%). Budgetary analysis revealed that Tomato marketing is profitable with BCR of 1.46. Regression analysis revealed that purchase cost, transport cost, and storage cost and labour cost had significant effect on quantity of Tomatoes sold. The study recommended that marketers in the study areas should for a formidable force by putting together their resources to ensure maximum return to scale on investment. In addition, government should rehabilitate roads linking rural areas which urban areas to ensure ease transportation of goods and avoid perishability of goods.
